PITTSBURG, Kan. -- The Pittsburg State softball team begin a streak of eight games on the road this weekend with doubleheaders at Emporia State and Washburn. The Gorillas will face off against the Lady Hornets at 3 p.m. on Friday (April 5) and the Lady Blues on Saturday (April 6) at 1 p.m.
Emporia State is 22-9 overall and 9-3 in MIAA play. They are fourth in the league standings. The Lady Hornets had won seven games in a row before dropping the second game of a doubleheader with Central Missouri on Tuesday. The team's other two conference losses were to Fort Hays State in the first conference games of the season.
ESU hits .326 as a team with six individuals hitting over .300 on the season. Cacy Williams leads the team with a .402 average and a .828 slugging percentage. She and Stephanie Goodwin share the team lead in RBI with 32. Goodwin also leads the team in home runs with 10. Taylor Zordel has a .396 batting average and leads the team with 36 runs scored, 42 hits, three triples and 13 stolen bases
Two pitchers do the work in the circle for the Lady Hornets. Karley Schmelzer and Lauren Sharp combine for a 2.61 ERA. Schmelzer has a 15-4 record with six shutouts and a 2.16 ERA. In 110.1 innings she has struck out 100 batters, while walking only 45. Sharp has a 7-5 record and a 3.19 ERA. In 85.2 innings she has struck out 32 batters and walked 37.
The Lady Blues are 7-19 overall and 3-7 in conference games. They are 12th in the MIAA standings. The team has lost each of their last three games. It will play Missouri Southern on Friday before the Gorillas come to Topeka on Saturday.
Washburn hits .267 as a team, while their pitchers allow opponents a .348 batting average. The Lady Blues are lead by Deidra Jones with a .406 batting average, 17 runs scored, five doubles and 15 RBI. Lauren Thimmesch leads the team with five home runs.
Thimmesch and Marina Quimby are the team's pitchers. Thimmesch has a 6-8 record and a 5 .44 ERA. in 99.0 innings she has struck out 42 batters and walked 45. Quimby is 1-11 with a save and a 8.67 ERA. in 63.0 innings she has struck out 34 batters and walked 57.

The Gorillas have a large pitching staff that has split the work farily evenly this season. The Gorillas' five pitchers have combined for a 3.03 ERA and are holding opponents to a .255 batting average. Kyndel Shelburn has pitched the most innings at 87.1. She has struck out 101 batters, while walking only 29. She has a team leading 2.40 ERA and a 6-5 record with two saves and three shutouts. Kylie Harpst and Samantha Grove each have 3-3 records. Harpst has a 2.53 ERA, while Grove's is 3.32. Grove also has one save on the season. Haleigh Sills has a 4-3 record and Jessica Barnes is 1-1.
