Gorilla Men Win FHSU Quadrangular, Women Place Second
HAYS,
Kan. -- The Pittsburg State University men’s track & field team
swept its competition at the Fort Hays State University Quadrangular Saturday
(Apr. 5) at Alex Francis Track, while the Gorilla women posted a 2-1 record
in the head-to-head competition against the three competing schools.
The PSU men, led by nine individual event victories,
won head-to-head match-ups against Chadron State College (113.5 to 47.5),
the University of Nebraska-Kearney (112-68) and Fort Hays State (101-85).
The PSU women, with seven individual event champions, downed CSC (98-51)
and UNK (87-79) and lost to FHSU (99-80). In dual competition, each squad
can only score two competitors per event.
For the Gorilla men, Darius Johnson won the open
400 meters in 49.82 seconds and he ran the anchor leg in the 1,600 meter
relay team victory in 3:21.57. Aaron Dunbar, Jeremy Dunkle and Anthony
Garrett also competed on the 1,600m relay. Dunkle added a win in the 110
meter hurdles (14.34) and Nate Thomas made it a sweep in the hurdle disciples,
takin the 400m hurldes in 57.07.
Tim Testa won the 800 meters in 1:57.53, while
MJ Hassaballa posted a victory in the 1,500 meters (4:13.05). Greg Clawson
cleared 6-6.75 to win the high jump, while PSU’s Phillip Dale and
Noah Dumpert swept the horizontal jumps with Dale winning the long jump
(23-0.75) and Dumpert earning the victory in the triple jump (47-7.75).
For the Gorilla women, MaryJo Mott won the 200
meters (25.60) and Haley Mendicki claimed top honors in the 400 meters
(58.95). Jenna Mellen and Brittney Graff added wins in the 1,500 meters
(4:56.17) and the 3,000 meters (10:56.04), respectively. Caitlin Rolfs
won the high jump at 5-5, while Michelle Mitchell cleared 11-3.75 to win
the pole vault competition. Ali Shaffer jumped 35-9.50 to win the triple
jump.
