Five Gorillas Qualify For Indoor Nationals
PITTSBURG
-- Five members of the Pittsburg State University track & field
squad -- three men and two women -- have qualified for the 2008 NCAA Division
II Indoor National Championships, scheduled for Mar. 14-15 at Mankato,
Minn.
On the men’s side, sophomore Jeremy Jackson
and senior Jeremy Dunkle have qualified in the 60 meter hurdles, while
freshman Kiara Jones has qualified in the triple jump. Jackson, from Burton,
Texas, enters the meet with the second-fastest time in DII (7.97), while
Dunkle, from Dewey, Okla., has the sixth-fastest time (8.02). Jones, a
Pittsburg native, has the 12th-best mark in the triple jump (48-3.5).
Jackson and Dunkle both have nationals experience,
while Jones makes his debut qualification for the national championships.
“I feel good about both of our hurdlers,”
said PSU head coach Russ Jewett. “Both of them have experience at
nationals and I feel good about their chances of getting some hard ware
and scoring some points for Pittsburg State University.”
On the women's side, senior Kiley Lund and sophomore
Emily Middleton each have qualified in the high jump. Lund, a Hutchinson,
Kan., native, and Middleton, from Iola, Kan., each have cleared 5-7 on
the season and enter nationals tied for 11th place.
“Both Kiley and Emily have nationals experience
and I like each of their chances of scoring points,” Jewett said.
“Nationals is all about making the bar on the first attempt and
that is a focus for each of them.”
