Schultz Hired as Assistant Baseball Coach
PITTSBURG
-- Pittsburg State University head baseball coach Steve Bever announced
today (August 22) that Beau Schultz has been hired as a full-time assistant
baseball coach for the Gorillas.
Schultz steps into the full-time position after
serving as a graduate assistant coach for the Gorillas in 2008. He had
spent the previous three years as a special education teacher -- two years
in the Carl Junction (Mo.) school district after working at Pittsburg
High School for one year. He served as an assistant baseball coach at
both PHS and CJHS, serving as head freshman coach at Carl Junction.
“The addition of Beau Schultz to the coaching
staff full time will make an immediate impact on our team,” Bever
said. “Beau has the respect of the players and coaches alike. His
knowledge of the game, ability to teach and ability to recruit will make
the program better.”
Schultz, an Independence, Kan., native, garnered
first-team All-MIAA, first-team All-Central Region and honorable mention
NCAA Division II All-America honors as a catcher for the Gorillas as a
senior in 2005. He finished his career as a three-time All-MIAA performer,
earning honorable mention All-MIAA honors in his first two seasons in
the Pitt State program (2003-04), after transferring to PSU from Cowley
County Community College.
Schultz started 195 games for the Gorillas, compiling
a .349 career batting average with 89 runs scored, 95 RBIs and a .988
career fielding percentage. He earned a bachelor’s degree in physical
education from Pittsburg State in 2005.
