Kirkwood’s Shot Lifts Gorillas to 9-5 Win Over
Ichabods
TOPEKA,
Kan. -- Austin Kirkwood delivered a two-run home run in the top
of the 10th inning to push Pittsburg State University in front and the
Gorillas tacked on two more insurance runs in the frame to claim a 9-5
victory over Washburn University Sunday (Apr. 6) at Fally Field.
The win helped the Gorillas (14-16,
9-9 MIAA) take three of four games in the series from the Ichabods
(9-16, 6-12 MIAA).
Kirkwood’s shot made a winner of Nate Templeton
(1-1) entered the game in the ninth and allowed two runs while trying
to save the game for Brad Bartling. Bartling had worked two scoreless
innings.
Taylor House added a two-run homer in the 10th to push
the Gorillas cushion to four runs in the final frame. House, Nick Giuliani
and Patrick Cook each collected two hits in the game.
Pitt State will return to action Tuesday (Apr. 8) when
the Gorillas host sixth-ranked Emporia State University in a 4 p.m. doubleheader
at Al Ortolani Field.
